Benefits of the American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship:
The AU EGL scholarship is a prestigious award that covers the entire cost of attendance (tuition, room, and board) for one outstanding international undergraduate student. To be eligible, you'll need a non-immigrant visa, preferably an F-1 or J-1 visa.
What's Included?
- Financial Support: The scholarship covers all billable AU expenses, ensuring you can focus on your studies without worrying about tuition, housing, and meals.
What's Not Included?
- Extra Costs: Keep in mind that some expenses are not covered, such as health insurance, textbooks, airfare, taxes, and miscellaneous costs (approximately U.S.$4,000 per year). Be sure to factor these additional costs into your budget.
Renewability and Eligibility
The AU EGL scholarship can be renewed for up to four years of your undergraduate studies, as long as you maintain good academic standing. Students from all majors offered at AU are welcome to apply.
Eligible Nationalities for the American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship:
This scholarship is exclusively for international students. If you're a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or pending permanent resident, you can't apply. This includes dual citizens of the U.S. and another country.

Eligibility Criteria for American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship:
While anyone can apply, some applicants have a stronger edge:
- Overcoming Challenges: The selection committee values students who have overcome obstacles and come from diverse backgrounds, both globally and socioeconomically.
- Academic Excellence: A strong academic record is crucial. Aim for a minimum 3.8 GPA (or be in the top 10% of your graduating class) for grades 9-12.
- Leadership and Service: Show your commitment to making a positive impact. Highlight your leadership skills, volunteer work, and community service, especially efforts that benefit your home country.
- English Language Proficiency: You'll need to demonstrate strong English language skills through one of these tests:
- TOEFL iBT (95+ overall score with all sub-scores 20 or above)
- Paper-based TOEFL (sub-scores of 24+ taken after May 31, 2017)
- IELTS (7.0+ overall score with all sub-scores 6.0 or above)
- SAT Reading (minimum score of 33)
- ACT English (minimum score of 29)
- PTE (minimum score of 65)
- Duolingo (minimum score of 125 with all sub-scores 115 or above)
- Cambridge Assessment English (minimum score of 185 with all sub-scores 169 or above)
- High School Graduation on Track: Be a graduating senior in high school with an expected graduation date by June 2024.
- Specific Requirements for Certain Programs: If you're in the IB system, plan to graduate with a full IB diploma and at least 3 HL subjects. For British A-Levels, complete at least 3 A-Levels and finish 13 years of study before August 2024.
